David Lawrey & Jaki Middleton, Best Shot, interactive kinetic sculpture, 2013. Video: the artists.

Best Shot is inspired by French scientist Étienne-Jules Marey’s 1895 chronophotographic gun, which was designed to photograph images in quick succession to capture movement. In Best Shot, the object has been reimagined as a gun that, instead of ‘taking’ images, projects them. When the trigger is held, an animation of a white cockatoo in flight appears on the wall in front. The work allows the visitor to visually and metaphorically reanimate a iconic Australian bird using a tool most commonly associated with death and destruction.
